US-based carrier Sprint has just introduced a new messaging service for iPhone and Android-powered smartphones, which is based on cloud technology.

Powered by cloud communications company Jibe Mobile, the new service is called Messaging Plus and allows customers to connect with family and friends on any wireless carrier in the United States, Canada and Mexico via text, instant messaging, group messaging, and video chat.

All this can be done using a simple app that also provides users the option to share photos and videos. Sprint seems to be the first US-based carrier to enable cloud-based enhanced messaging features, which can be downloaded on compatible smartphones and used on multiple network operators.

Keep in mind that Messaging Plus is available for free and can be installed on iPhones and Android-powered smartphones via Sprint Zone, Sprint.com, Google Play or the Apple App Store.

Once installed, Sprint customers will be able to invite their family and friends to download the application from Google Play or the Apple App Store to their devices to enable all the messaging features included.

For the time being, Messaging Plus is compatible with the following smartphones: HTC EVO 4G LTE, HTC One, Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsung Galaxy S4, Samsung Galaxy Victory, Samsung Note 2, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and iPhone 5.

According to Sprint, Messaging Plus will be pre-loaded on all Android-powered smartphones starting this month.

“Messaging Plus is another industry first for Sprint and another example of our countless innovations that enable customers to do more with their wireless device. We are excited to bring all messaging capabilities into one easy-to-use application.

“And, we are pleased to be able to grow the use of the technology by having Messaging Plus users invite their contacts on any carrier in the United States to download it to their device,” said Wayne Ward, vice president, business and product development, Sprint.
