Sprint is the second wireless carrier in the United States to release to the market the Novatel Wireless MiFi 2200 intelligent mobile hotspot device after Verizon Wireless, in a move meant to offer mobile phone users the possibility to transform virtually any area into a personal Wi-Fi hotspot. Basically, the MiFi 2200 will enable users to connect WiFi-enabled devices like laptops, MP3 players and gaming devices to the Internet through a small Wi-Fi network the MiFi 2200 creates.

The MiFi 2200 will become available for purchase at the beginning of June, when it is expected to retail for a price tag of $99.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and upon the signing of a two-year service agreement with the operator. According to the company, the MiFi 2200 will be available with the $59.99 per month Mobile Broadband Only plan and with the $149.99 per month Simply Everything Plan + Mobile Broadband, both plans offering up to 5 GB per month and 5 cents per megabyte overage.

The personal cloud of high-speed Internet connectivity that the MiFi 2200 is capable of creating allows for up to five devices to connect to the Internet on the carrier's 3G network, while also offering compatibility with a wide range of WiFi-enabled products. According to the company, the device comes with universal Wi-Fi compatibility.

The specifications list of the MiFi 2200 also shows the capability to offer mobile broadband Rev A Internet access wirelessly, advanced security through WPA2-PSK, WEP and SPI Firewall, GPS capabilities (allowing users to take advantage of select location and mapping applications, such as getting driving or walking directions or finding the best restaurant nearby), and a brushed aluminum finish. The device measures 3.50”x 2.32” x 0.35” and weighs 2.05 oz. The included battery can deliver up to 4 hours of use time, or 40 hours of standby time on a single charge.
