A new rugged Android smartphone is set to arrive on shelves at Sprint and Boost Mobile soon, namely the Kyocera Hydro Edge, capable of withstanding sprayed water or submersion in up to 3.28 feet (1 meter) of fresh water for 30 minutes.

The new mobile phone will arrive on the market later this summer with a dual-core processor packed inside and with Google’s Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system on top.

The new device sports a 1GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor inside, a 4-inch capacitive impact-resistant touchscreen, and a 5-megapixel photo snapper on the back, with LED flash and video recording capabilities.

Furthermore, the new device will hit shelves with Smart Sonic Receiver technology packed inside, meant to deliver an improved audio experience when in noisy environments.

“Hydro Edge features Kyocera’s proprietary, award-winning Smart Sonic Receiver technology, which eliminates the need for a traditional speaker in a handset by using vibrations to transmit sounds directly to the eardrum,” Sprint explains.

“Placing the phone in contact with the general area of the ear creates clear sound even in very noisy environments, such as construction sites, sporting events, concerts and playgrounds.”

No official info on the release date and pricing of Kyocera Hydro Edge has been provided as of now, but Sprint announced that these details would be provided closer to its availability.

However, Sprint did confirm that users would be able to enjoy this handset’s features on its Truly Unlimited plans, and that it would be released at Boost Mobile’s no-contract $55 Android Monthly Unlimited plan.

“Just about everyone knows someone who has damaged their phone in water,” said Fared Adib, senior vice president, product development, Sprint.

“Kyocera Hydro Edge is the perfect smartphone to eliminate the panic of water damage for busy parents or anyone who works outside – from lifeguards to landscape architects. Sprint is making it even more affordable to enjoy Hydro Edge by giving our customers the choice between Sprint and Boost Mobile for their device purchase.”
