Following a very long wait, the Android 2.2 Froyo operating system is almost here for the Samsung Epic 4G smartphone on Sprint's airwaves.

Some of the latest rumors around the Internet already suggested that Sprint might be on its way to make the software available on Monday, and the carrier has just confirmed those plans.

Starting with February 21st, Sprint customers who own a Samsung Epic 4G should start receiving the Android 2.2 Froyo OS upgrade, with the entire process expected to be completed within four days, the wireless operator officially confirmed on Friday.

“Android 2.2/Froyo will be pushed to Sprint Samsung Epic 4G customers beginning Feb. 21. All users should have access to Android 2.2 by Feb. 25,” Sprint announced via a post on its community forums.

The new update will be delivered as MR EB13. According to Sprint, in addition to the Android 2.2 Froyo OS, the software would offer a range of other enhancements too.

Some of these improvements would include:

- Upgrade of the Google OS from Éclair to Froyo (2.2.1) - Ability to install applications to external storage - Improved Bluetooth device support - Bluetooth Voice Dialing - Flash Player 10.1 - GPS Enhancements - Improved OS performance As stated above, Sprint plans on pushing the update over the air (OTA) to all Epic 4G users in about 4 days.

Users will be informed on the availability of the software as soon as their Epic 4G device is in the queue and eligible to download the software.

The update will appear as unavailable for those who will check for it manually, but will be sent to users as soon as their devices enter the respective wave of updates.

The software update will be delivered as a wireless download (over-the-air, or OTA) in waves starting on February 21. All Samsung Epic 4G owners should have access to the download by the end of the week (Feb. 25),” the company notes.

This update was initially promised many months ago, but Samsung and Sprint delayed its delivery, the same as did other wireless carriers in the United States. Hopefully, they will follow suit, and more Galaxy S devices in the country will taste Froyo soon.
