Spotify has some impressive numbers to share, it has now reached the one million paid subscribers milestone. At this point, it is the largest paid, on-demand music streaming service in the world and that's before its US launch, which, yet again, is rumored to be happening soon. Spotify actually reached the milestone earlier, but decided to only now reveal the numbers.

"It seems like only yesterday we were hatching ideas for a new music service in a tiny office-cum-apartment with a broken coffee machine, and the party we threw having reached one million users almost two years ago today was one to remember," Spotify cofounder and CEO Daniel Ek reminisces.

"So it’s with a sense of real pride and excitement that we can announce a new milestone today, having welcomed our millionth paying subscriber to the service," he announced.

"It’s a testament to our fantastic users who continue to support us and spread the Spotify word, either by telling friends or sharing some of the 200 million playlists that you’ve put together so far," he continued.

The milestone is a very important one for the company. Not only is it a big enough number that streaming service can't be ignored anymore, it also shows that this type of services, especially those with a free component like Spotify, can not only survive, but flourish.

More important than the figure itself, is the percentage of users that pay for the premium service which has unlimited play and mobile access. About 15 percent of all Spotify users pay for access.

There are about 6.67 million users in the European countries where Spotify is available in, UK, Spain, France, Germany, Sweden, Finland and Norway.

Whether this will be enough to convince the major labels of the service's viability remains to be seen, however the latest rumors seem to be looking good. Apparently, Spotify has only two or possibly only one more major label to sign for an US launch, which is slated for the coming months, after two years in the works.
