Lyons, a former White Sox player, had been with the Fox network since 1996, but his career as a sports broadcaster has been just as marred by controversy as his sports one. Now, the big-mouthed analyst seems to have made his final mistake, as the executives decided that it was much better to distance themselves from him by firing him.
During the American League Championship Series, aired on Friday, Lyons and his colleague, Lou Piniella, were covering the Game 3 between Oakland Athletics and Detroit Tigers. At one point, Piniella compared the production from A's infielder Marco Scutaro to finding a wallet.
He then continued the joke by saying that the A's needed Frank Thomas to get 'en fuego' (on fire) because he, Scutaro, had been 'frio' (cold). Lyons responded to the joke by carrying it a little too far and mocking the Spanish heritage of Piniella: 'Lou's hablaing some espanol there, and I'm still looking for my wallet. I don't understand him, and I don't want to sit close to him now', he said, butchering the conjugation for 'to speak' in Spanish.
Although no one complained about the remarks while the game was still one, Fox later decided to fire the former player. 'Steve Lyons has been relieved of his Fox Sports duties for making comments on air that the company found inappropriate', the network's spokesperson announced on Friday.
Lyons' publicist refused to answer any of the calls seeking comment.
