And so it begins

Spore is set on its way to conquer all videogame markets in the world and one of the first to send official word of its surrender is the United Kingdom videogame chart. Will Wright’s game has debuted at number one with another Electronic Arts release, Mercenaries 2: World in Flames, in second spot. Spore managed to account for 53% of all the PC games sold during the week it was launched.

Spore is a simulation of everything, a game that challenges the player to take a single cell organism, move up through five stages of evolution, from Cell to Galactic, and dominate the galaxy. The game is centered on the customization of the creature that you design, with a great array of looks possible. One of the most interesting aspects of Spore is that it has a faux multiplayer element in which creatures made by other players will be used to populate your game.

Because it was released for multiple platforms, Mercenaries 2 managed to be number one in the combined formats charts, with the Xbox 360 version proving to be the most popular and accounting for more than 60% of the sales of the game.

Nintendo's Wii Fit manages to get the third spot in sales, even if it’s been quite a while since it was launched. The fitness game has managed to attract a lot of players with its integrated Balance Board and with the way it promises to tone up your body while playing.

The United Kingdom top 40 of videogames was dominated again by titles for the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii, with 12 each, while the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 each had six titles in the chart and the PC had four. No PlayStation Portable and no PlayStation 2 titles made it to the top 40, mainly because of the low appeal these platforms have to UK gamers.
