Electronic Arts is one of the biggest companies in gaming, owning a huge amount of highly profitable franchises, from its sports ones, like FIFA or Madden, to other titles like Need for Speed or Sims. This has generated a lot of profit for the company, which has been reinvesting in creating new and interesting franchises.

Such is the case with Spore, which was revealed last year for the PC, from the studio that brought forth the extremely popular Sims series, EA Maxis, and designed by one of the most revered men in gaming, Will Wright. While it has already received quite a few expansions, a major project coming from Maxis in the near future will be the Spore Hero/Spore Hero Arena titles, which will be exclusive to the Nintendo Wii and DS, respectively.

While a few details about them were known, yesterday saw EA announce the concrete release date of the two iterations, which will be October 9. The titles will be specifically built for the two platforms and will take advantage of all the unique features of the Wii and the DS.

“Spore Hero and Spore Hero Arena give Spore and Nintendo fans a new, dynamic and engaging way to interact with their customized creature heroes,” said Lucy Bradshaw, VP and general manager at Maxis. “Players’ heroes take center stage as both games, distinctly tailor-made for its Nintendo platform, infuse creativity, combat and adventure to create a unique gameplay experience on the Wii and Nintendo DS.”

Spore Hero will see players delve into an action adventure type of game, in which they must embark on a quest to save the home planet of their creature. Fun battles, tricky puzzles and a lot of unlockables will be featured in this game, as well as the ability to go online and test your brawling skills in the multiplayer mode.

Spore Hero Arena, on the other hand, will be placed in the same timeline but will see gamers engage in arena-based combat, hence the name. Players will be more altruist, as they will embark on quests to save multiple planets from evil forces. They will be able to create their own gladiator hero in order to fight the enemies and free the righteous creatures. The game will also take advantage of the features of the DS as players will be able to battle with up to three friends locally and one via the Wi-Fi connection.

Overall, if you liked Spore and have in your possession one of the two consoles, then these two games might make it on your holiday shopping list.
