Spore was one of last year's biggest and most hyped-up titles. Being the next big thing from Sims creator Will Wright and promising to let players create their own creature and then guide it through the stages of its evolution, it became very popular on the PC.
But the new franchise has also received a handheld version, in the form of Spore Creatures, which was made through a collaboration between the owner of the rights and the creator of the PC version, Maxis, and Foundation 9. The title was released on September 5, 2008 in Europe and in North America on September 7, the same year.
It borrows a lot of features from the PC version, as it will allow players to have the same basic experience, which touches on creativity, exploration, sharing and collecting. The unique features of the Nintendo DS are the stylus, the touchscreen setup and the wireless connection. The game focuses more on the creature phase and has its own creator that bears the same name as the title.
As the creatures made by the players evolve, they will be able to explore their planet and, eventually, their galaxy, making friends and enemies along the way. A special feature called the Spore Species Guide will keep track of the animals they encounter along the way, including what kind of trades they made with them.
The title is similar in terms of visuals with Japanese flat, rod puppets and shadow box art, unlike the full-pledged PC version. Overall, it was well received by reviewers, who revealed that the long adventure was certain to keep players interested in the game.
