And ActiveX takes the center stage yet again. SurfControl has reported the detection of a spoofed Google website complete with a legitimate Google URL that makes use of the ActiveX controls in Internet
Explorer to install a cluster of malicious software. Agent.zs.Trojan, Agent.lk.Trojan, Small.hj.Trojan, Agent.wd.Trojan are all examples of the malware involved featuring keylogging and adware capabilities.

"The spoofed Web site utilizes typosquatting, a technique that mimics a legitimate looking domain and delivers a fraudulent Google page that looks identical to the original. The fraudulent Google site attempts to install ActiveX controls on a user's machine. This will occur automatically if Internet Explorer security settings allow installation of ActiveX controls," revealed SurfControl.

In the eventuality that IE's security settings do not allow direct installation of ActiveX controls, the user's acceptance is necessary in order to lead to a successful infection. In addition to installing malware, the IE homepage is changed to a website with Adult materials.
