Disney Interactive Studios has announced that a demo version of Split/Second, its action racing videogame created by Black Rock Studios, is up on the Xbox Live service from Microsoft. Those using the Xbox 360 will be able to enjoy it exclusively until May 11 comes around, when the demo also becomes available on the PlayStation 3 from Sony.

The demo version of Split/Second allows access to the Airport Terminal level in the normal race mode. There are quite a few buildings inside the airport terminal that can be used to slow down the progress of other racers, including a traffic control tower, which can be brought down and a cargo plane that can be piloted around to stop other cars. The entire concept of Split/Second is built around racing with the twist of being able to trigger complex events, like explosions and roadblocks, to slow down other racers.

Black Rock Studios is promising both a single player campaign where players will need to choose wisely before triggering destructive events every lap or waiting to fill up meters, which give them access to more powerful versions and a multiplayer where both pure racing skill and abilities will decide the winner.

Craig Relyea, the senior vice president of global marketing at Disney Interactive Studios, said that Split/Second “elevates action racing to a new level by enabling players to strategically take out their opponents by dynamically altering the course in real time. Split/Second further showcases Black Rock Studio's ability to innovate and deliver a compelling experience that has wide appeal beyond the traditional racing genre.”

Split/Second is set to be launched on the Xbox 360 from Microsoft, the PlayStation 3 from Sony and the PC, North American gamers getting access to the game on May 18 and those playing in Europe having to wait three more days.
