After lots of leaks and rumors, Ubisoft has finally acknowledged the existence of a Splinter Cell Trilogy that will be remastered in high definition and released for the PlayStation 3 next year.

Ubisoft is among the latest publishers to embark on high definition trilogies for the PS3, and has already given this treatment to its Prince of Persia franchise, that saw its Sands of Time series released for the Sony console.

Now, the company's Splinter Cell series has also been confirmed for such a treatment in 2011.

According to Ubisoft, the HD collection is set to appear next year and consist of the original Splinter Cell, Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, all remastered in high definition with new textures, trophy support and extra features.

Sadly, no other details were revealed, but expect more information to be shared as we step into the new year.

Ubisoft's high definition efforts were leaked a few times before their official announcements by online retailers, but it's nice to hear it straight from the French company.

It seems that PlayStation 3 owners should start getting accustomed to seeing remastered versions of older PlayStation 2 titles appear for their platform.

Crystal Dynamics announced yesterday that it too would be bringing a Tomb Raider trilogy to the PS3 in March of 2011, with Tomb Raider: Legend and Anniversary, as well as the more recent Tomb Raider: Underworld.

Sony started this trend back in 2009, with the God of War Collection, containing the first and second games, and continued this year with the Sly Cooper one, which had all of the three games released in the franchise.

The company is also set to release the Team Ico Collection next year, with Shadow of the Colossus and Ico remastered for the PS3 in high definition and with support for technologies like stereoscopic 3D.
