In case you're curious about Nintendo's upcoming multiplayer shooter Splatoon, you can now watch a fresh gameplay video highlighting its colorful action and clever mechanics.

The video shows the Nintendo Wii U exclusive video game running in 1080p at 60 frames per second, following a player engaged in an action-packed multiplayer match based on the brand new Splat Zones mode.

The match takes place on the Walleye Warehouse stage, and the video also sneaks a peek at the Ink Strike special weapon, a tool with a devastating effect.

The game is a family-friendly take on the third-person shooter genre, replacing bullets with ink and removing death from the equation.

Players take on the role of a member of a squad of cephalopodes, heading into an arena and trying to cover it with their team's colored paint. Characters can also dive into the ink in order to increase the speed at which they move, and even perform teleports to distant regions of the map that are covered in the appropriate paint.

The title was revealed at E3 2014 and caused a surge in interest in Nintendo's latest console, the Wii U, getting many people excited at the prospect of having yet another great-looking family-friendly video game in their collection.

Splatoon has the potential to become a pretty big deal

The Japanese video game and console maker is famous for its fun local multiplayer experiences, and now it seems that the company is looking to boost its array of multiplayer titles with one that puts a unique twist on a genre dominated by military-oriented experiences.

The game is definitely shaping up to become the Big N's next big thing, joining the likes of Mario Kart 8, Hyrule Warriors, and Super Smash Bros. As big third-party publishers are no longer targeting the Wii U with their blockbusters, Nintendo is forced to rely on its own internal studios to come up with neat ideas and engaging products to sell its hardware.

The Legend of Zelda is another title with the potential to bring the console back into the spotlight, expected sometime this year, and relying on close to 30 years of lore and tradition, as well as on the power of the Wii U and some innovative features to draw crowds in.

Splatoon is due out this May, exclusively on the Wii U.
