Nintendo announced that Splatoon, the colorful multiplayer third-person shooter revealed at last year's E3, would be released on the Wii U home console this May.

Splatoon is all about splattering the battlefield in colored ink and looks as colorful and joyful as all of Nintendo's other games. The announcement garnered a lot of attention from the company's fans, excited to see the company explore new mechanics and genres.

The four-on-four shooter revolves around players spraying and covering as much of the battlefield as possible with their ink guns. The paint is also used to take down opponents, as players can quickly swim through the paint, as longs as it's their team's color, in order to quickly navigate the arenas.

The game was initially revealed during Nintendo's presentation at the E3 convention in mid-2014. In November, the company announced that the title would also feature a single-player campaign, where gamers would have to battle an army of octopi.

What's new in Splatoon

The announcement comes from the latest Nintendo Direct, where Nintendo of America's Bill Trinen made the reveal and showed off some brand new features of the highly anticipated shooter.

The game will feature a hub world where players will be able to interact with others' avatars, called "inklings." A tower in the hub will enable users to engage in multiplayer matches, which will allow them to earn in-game currency that can be utilized to purchase various weapons and miscellaneous apparel.

The items, in addition to providing visual customization options for Splatoon players, will also bestow certain buffs, enhancing the inklings' abilities in battle.

In addition to making these reveals, Nintendo also released a slew of brand new screenshots from the shooter, enabling players to get a better idea of what the game is about.

Splatoon is expected to ship in May, to be available both as a physical retail package and as a downloadable title on the Wii U eShop.
