Splatoon, the upcoming third-person shooter from Nintendo, has just gotten a neat gameplay video, as well as a slew of screenshots showing off its colorful graphics.

The latest video highlights the upcoming Nintendo Wii U exclusive's single-player content, and it seems that the Japanese corporation is trying to build a brand new super franchise for children of all ages to enjoy.

The latest Nintendo Direct livestream has revealed a lot of the company's upcoming projects, among which Majora's Mask, Codename: Steam, Xenoblade Chronicles X, and many others. In addition to this, a bunch of indie titles are also headed to its platforms in the following months, ensuring that the Big N's fans will have a lot of options when it comes to enjoying their favorite pastime.

The biggest news from Nintendo's latest Direct is the fact that Splatoon will not be restricted solely to multiplayer battling, but that gamers will also be able to enjoy painting battlefields in all sorts of vibrant colors over the course of an extensive single-player campaign.

A promising new start

The most criticized fact about Nintendo (aside from hardware region locking) is that the company seems content to recycle its blockbuster franchises over and over, rehashing the same mascot-driven content that everyone has been enjoying for years without changing too much.

It's hard to criticize the company when looking at its sales, as die-hard fans of the timeless franchises are gobbling up the countless iterations year after year, but even among them, many are asking for something new to enjoy, and twists in the classic formulas always prove to be a good idea, well-received by critics and fans alike.

Now, Nintendo is apparently trying to add another strong title to the likes of Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Pokemon and Donkey Kong, attempting to capture a different kind of audience. Splatoon was unveiled during E3 2014, and it was definitely the most attention-grabbing of Nintendo's titles, even managing to generate a surge of interest in the Wii U among the gaming community.

Nintendo is once again expressing its creativity

Splatoon seems to be just what the company needed, a team-based multiplayer shooter that uses the patented childish demeanor that everyone loves about Nintendo's creations. Everyone assumed that it would be a multiplayer-only title, but now Nintendo is surprising the masses once again, with the reveal that Splatoon is an even bigger project than initially thought.

The game's single-player campaign will use all kinds of zany mechanics and the same colored goo spreading action seen in the multiplayer reveals. The video reveals something that is poised to become one of the most original and engaging platforming experiences created by the Japanese company in recent times, with genuinely interesting mechanics and an adorable overall outlook.

Splatoon will be available exclusively on the Nintendo Wii U home console, expected to come out sometime during Q2 2015.
