Developed by @comex, Spirit is an untethered jailbreak for the newest iPhone and iPod touch models, as well as for the iPad. It jailbreaks the latest firmwares, but cannot unlock a device. Users also need an already activated device to use Spirit. Softpedia does not encourage jailbreaking.

“Spirit freed,” the latest announcement over at the iPhone Dev Team’s blog reads. “The Spirit jailbreak is now out! Congratulations to @comex for the first userland jailbreak since the 1.x days,” it reveals. The Team goes to explain that, “Spirit provides an untethered jaibreak on those newer devices which used to require a computer nearby to finish the boot process. Spirit is able to do this because it doesn’t actually kick in until after the kernel is running,” and it provides a link to the download location.

According to its creator, if you’re using a tethered jailbreak, you will have to restore your device, in order to use Spirit. “Do not upgrade if you use an unlock on an iPhone 3G or 3GS,” a warning goes. Nevertheless, you can restore to 3.1.2, as long as you have your SHSH blobs backed up for that particular firmware version, according to @comex.

Jailbreakers can use Spirit on “any iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch on firmware 3.1.2, 3.1.3, or 3.2,” the hacker reveals. They will also need an activated device. Those who are stuck on the Connect to iTunes or Emergency Call screen will not be able to benefit from this hack. iTunes 9.1.1 (the newest version) is supported. @comex encourages jailbreakers to sync with iTunes before attempting to hack their device using Spirit. Why, he doesn’t say.

Softpedia doesn't encourage jailbreaking / unlocking the iPhone / iPod touch / iPad, or any other device. This article has a purely informational purpose and doesn't, in any way, suggest that you should hack your Apple device. Using hacks may render your device unusable, or may reduce the quality of your experience employing the respective device. If you choose to download and install jailbreak tools, you will do so at your own risk. Unlocking / jailbreaking your iPhone / iPod touch may violate your warranty or the EULA with Apple and / or your cellular-service provider.
