Power supply units aren’t certainly the first thing that will pop to one’s mind when thinking about Spire, but this hasn’t stopped the company from releasing a new series of PSUs in its BlackDragon series.

The BlackDragon range includes three models with Wattages of 400W, 500W and 600W, and all of these feature dual 12V rails.

Depending on the wattage of the PSU, Spire’s BlackDragon models can deliver between 30 and 45 Amps of current to the system.

As far as the available connectors are concerned, the units can include up to five SATA power plugs, at least four MOLEX plugs, as well as a pair of 6+2-pin PCI Express connectors, which means that graphics cards such as the Nvidia GTX 580 should be supported without any problems.

Spire goes even so far as saying that its BlackDragon power supply units can support 4-way SLI/Crossfire GPU’s, but we doubt this to be true.

Moving to cooling, Spire’s latest power supplies are kept cool under heavy usage with a large temperature PWM-controlled 120mm double ball-bearing fan with blue lighting.

According to Spire, the installed fan enables the BlackDragon PSUs to generate only 10dBA of noise when delivering under 250W of power to the system.

All the power supplies are said to be compliant with the 80PLUS standard (certification is pending) and also comply with the ErP (Energy Related product) directive to ensure less than 1W of power is used in passive standby and off modes.

The BlackDragon power supply series is available right now for shipping from Spire’s factories and prices will start at 73,50 EUR, or $95,99.

Together with the PSU, the retail box also includes a set of mounting screws, three velcro cable straps and that all important power cord.
