Video game publisher SEGA has announced that a new game mode has been added to the multiplayer mix between action and role-playing game, allowing players to go up against each other in a series of exciting duels.

The players versus player battles will take place in the coliseum that a new character called King Krogmo maintains.

The fiction of Spiral Knights says that the Coliseum was originally created in order to allow the monsters of the game world to take a break from their hard work of providing tough challenges for gamers.

Here the monsters always stay high up in the stands while the players themselves enter the arena and fight each other, with the victors set to get gold coins from the King Krogmo himself.

Those coins can then be used to get access to a number of special in-game items that can enhance the experience of playing Spiral Knights.

SEGA and the developers at Three Rings are also saying that all those who compete in player versus player competitions will get the new Spiral Bombhead Mask as a reward for completing their first battle with another gamer.

In order to celebrate the launch of the new players versus player mechanics, the developers are also introducing a new package that can be bought for real-world money.

It includes the following: 9,500 worth of Crystal Energy, 5 Mist Tanks, 10 Krogmo Coins, 1 unspecified commemorative artifact, 5 Krogmo Coin Boosters and two pieces of costume, Plasmatech Bombhead Mask and the Plasmatech Demo Suit.

Spiral Knights is unique because it aims to marry the mechanics of a free-to-play MMO with the sensibilities of retro gaming, being played from a third-person perspective and adopting an art style that draws inspiration from a number of classics like The Legend of Zelda titles.

Spiral Knights can now be played on the free-to-play section on Steam.
