With the Slim and the Go

Sony was, undoubtedly, the company that had most to celebrate when the NPD Group sales figures for September were released. The PlayStation 3 managed to sell almost half a million consoles during the month, significantly more than the Xbox 360 and even more than the Nintendo Wii, and with three PS3 games breaking into the software top ten.

Jack Tretton, who is the Chief Executive Officer and president of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, issued a statement saying that “We are in the midst of one of the most exciting times for PlayStation as we continue to redefine entertainment experiences for consumers, both at home and on the go. We've made unprecedented strides in digital and mobile entertainment with the availability of PSPgo.” It seems that Sony has decided to replace the “momentum building” phrase it used this spring with “redefine entertainment” as the PS3 gets ahead of the Xbox 360.

Tretton added that the Sony home gaming console is set to also post very good results in the coming months, mostly because of the line up of videogames that should arrive on the device, like Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time, God of War III, MAG and ModNation Racers, exclusive for the PlayStation 3, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars and Assassin's Creed 2.

October could be an even better month for Sony if Uncharted 2: Among Thieves manages to translate its very good initial reviews into solid sales numbers. A warm reception for the game coupled with the reduced price of the PlayStation 3 might prove a powerful incentive for gamers to pick up both products.

Of course, even if Sony again performs well in October, the coming months could prove a challenge as Infinity Ward and Activision release Modern Warfare 2, a game that has already been confirmed to have two DLC packs coming initially to the Xbox 360.
