The PR department is a very important part of almost any company, as it is essential to maintain a good corporate image even when things aren't going so well financially. Console manufacturers have some very big public relations departments as getting a positive spin on results from sales-tracking services is essential for keeping customers interested in their products.
Last week we've seen the NPD group release its charts of the best-selling software and
hardware products over the month of April. While for both Microsoft and Sony things didn't look so good, Nintendo achieved some very interesting results.
While the Wii isn't going through the best of times, the Japanese company saw some big sales from its handheld DS device, managing to move over one million units across North America. The new version of the portable console,
the DSi, contributed to that number with over 827,000 units. The Wii also managed once more to sell more than the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 combined, making Nintendo of America's Cammie Dunaway quite happy.
“Nintendo systems and software represented 56 percent of the industry total shares in April, indicating continued strong consumer preference for quality and value,” she said. “Looking ahead, we are excited to introduce active-play games like Punch-Out!! and Wii Sports Resort into the market.”
It seems that she let the numbers speak for themselves, refraining from the bigger announcements and PR talk like the representatives from Microsoft or Sony. Let's not forget that the company also
dominates the software charts, where a lot of the best-selling titles of last month were from first-party games from the Japanese corporation.
Hopefully the company has some more tricks up its sleeve and will continue to supply its many fans with quality releases.
