It reigns on both hardware and software

The console war has always been decided by the sales charts that reflect which platforms sold and which didn't, giving us a glimpse at how each of the three major manufacturers are doing. But thanks to the corporations' public relations departments, no matter how bad the results are, they can put a positive spin on the monthly NPD numbers.

In Nintendo's case, the PR department didn't need to twist the words, as the Japanese company still managed to outsell its opponents, Sony and Microsoft, in terms of consoles, with the Wii still being top dog. But even though a lot of analysts claimed that sales were dropping for the small white console both in terms of platforms sold and as regards games, Nintendo is still happy.

The company managed to sell 601,000 units in the month of March, with its smaller brother, the DS, managing to move past the half-million mark, even though the DSi was gearing up for launch at the beginning of April.

“Nintendo systems accounted for 58.4 percent of the video game hardware sold in March, more than all other systems combined,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Consumers continue to be attracted to the wide range of software available and the great value of Nintendo systems.”

But Nintendo's bragging didn't end here, as it also revealed that it had four games in the top 10 best-seller list of March, with Pokemon Platinum, Wii Fit, Wii Play and Mario Kart Wii managing to outsell other more hardcore games for other platforms.

The Japanese company also stated that early reports of DSi sales were much higher than in the case of the original DS, as we previously reported. All in all, things are going pretty smooth for Nintendo, and with new blockbusters and add-ons due out in summer, things will stay that way.
