Ookla, a leader in broadband speed testing and web-based network diagnostic applications. has announced the release of an updated version of its Speedtest.net application for the iPhone 4, also confirming the upcoming availability of an iPad-compatible installment.

Speedtest.net is a utility that allows users to perform sophisticated network testing from their iOS device. According to Ookla, their testing engines have been used by consumers more than 1.6 billion times thus far.

The company operates Speedtest.net using a massive global infrastructure to minimize the impact of Internet congestion and latency. Speedtest.net acts as a truly valuable resource for bandwidth testing and related information, with millions of tests performed every month across hundreds of servers.

Designed to take full advantage of the iPhone 4 Retina display, the updated version of Ookla’s Speedtest.net app features a completely new interface with dynamic real-time performance statistics.

“The redesigned application interface provides a dynamic view of network performance through real-time graphing of download and upload speeds, showing detailed fluctuations throughout the testing procedure,” Ookla states in a report issued this week.

“Both Android and an iPad specific version are planned for release later this year,” the company adds.

Ookla notes that its free Speedtest.net Mobile app is actually the world’s most downloaded application of its kind, with more than 250,000 daily tests and downloads to more than 4 million devices running either Apple’s iOS or Google’s Android.

“The iPhone iOS and Android operating systems are fascinating both in terms of what they offer to consumers now and moreover in the promise they hold for increasingly powerful mobile computing and utility,” said Mike Apgar, co-founder and managing partner of Ookla.

“We’ve benefited from being central to interest in device and network performance from users and the media.”

“To date, our applications have already been used to conduct more than 50 million mobile tests, and with questions about signal reception, network upload glitches and more, the numbers just keep growing,” Apgar added.

“The new version, with its real-time performance data, will be a boon to anyone interested in greater detail about mobile network upload/download fluctuations.”

According to the Ookla co-founder, Speedtest.net Mobile is just one of many solutions “designed to put Ookla at the edge of evolving networks everywhere.”

The app is currently at version 2.0.1, for which Ookla also lists new abilities like “swipe to delete results” and a resolved issue with best server selection.

More bug fixes are on their way, with version 2.0.2 pending its release to the Apple App Store.
