The Nintendo DS has seen quite a few franchises flourish on it and give birth to a very successful and profitable series. An example of such a thing is Disney's Spectrobes franchise, which has seen a huge success with the first iteration when it was launched a few years ago.

Realizing just what it had on its hands, the company tasked the Jupiter studio with creating a sequel to it. This new project was finalized with Spectrobes: Beyond the Portals, which was released on October 7, 2008 in North America, while Japan received it on December 11, the same year, and Europeans on February 27, 2009.

The game boasts some major improvements over the first title, while continuing the story of Rallen and Jeena, two space officers who have saved their native Nanairo system from the evil Krawls. The peace after the conflict is disrupted by the abduction of one of their friends, Aldous, by a Krawl superior officer known as Maja. The fact that mysterios portals are opening around the Nanairo system makes the missions even more difficult, but, thanks to new Spectrobes and a new species of Dark Spectrobes, Rallen and Jeena have what it takes to get it done.

- Players can take on the role of either Rallen or, for the first time, Jeena in special missions where her technical expertise is needed;
- A new map system to assist with exploration;
- New excavation and battle features;
- More than 100 creatures, plus all-new items, gadgets, and a customizable patrol cruiser;
- Online battle system utilizing the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection;
- Includes DGamer, Disney Interactive Studios’ innovative new technology that provides a fun, connected online game community for Disney video game fans.

Overall, Spectrobes: Beyond the Portals has been well received by critics and reviewers, with many people praising the improvements over the first title but frowning upon the lack of a viable camera control system.
