One of the smartphones that Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia might plan on bringing to the market before the end of this year is currently known under the rumored codename of EOS, supposedly set to land on shelves as a new handset packing a 41-megapixel photo snapper.

Nothing has been officially confirmed on the device as of now, but new reports claim that it is real, and that Nokia is set to pack high-end hardware inside it.

According to a recent article on MyNokiaBlog, an undisclosed source familiar with Nokia’s plans on the matter has confirmed that the device would indeed pack a 41MP camera on the back, thus bringing the true PureView technology to the handset vendor’s Windows Phone 8 lineup.

The handset will sport LED and Xenon flash attached to the camera, OIS (Optical Image Stabilization), and Variable Aperture lens, while also featuring a more detailed camera user interface when compared to that of Nokia 808 PureView.

Furthermore, the smartphone might arrive on shelves with a quad-core processor packed inside, which means that it might feature the upcoming Windows Phone 8 GDR3 platform flavor right from the start, which had already been rumored to bring along support for more powerful processors.

However, MyNokiaBlog also mentions that the Nokia EOS might be launched in a dual-core variant as well, and that the quad-core flavor will pack a Snapdragon 800 CPU inside.

The smartphone will also feature a 1280 x 768 pixel AMOLED touchscreen, of unknown size, as well as a 2000 mAh battery, the same as Lumia 920. A microSD memory card slot will also be included in the package.

Apparently, Nokia plans on making the smartphone available for purchase in the United States exclusively on AT&T’s network in the beginning, while also aiming at bringing it to shelves in other countries around the world 1-3 months afterwards.

It’s still uncertain when exactly the new smartphone will be made official, but it might not be too long before Nokia decides to unwrap it. Apparently, the initial plan was to announce it at MWC 2013.
