You never know what risks you're taking by just attending a birthday party with your friends and eating the cake you're being served. A Spanish student learned this lesson the hard way, after eating a birthday cake baked with marijuana.

The young man was taken to a Madrid hospital early on Sunday, in critical condition. According to Javier Chivite, a representative of the city's emergency services, he has been in a brief coma and was not responding to stimuli when he arrived at the Puerta de Hierro de Majadahonda hospital, Denver Post reports.

Luckily, the student recovered later, but he remained under medical observation.

At first, doctors couldn't tell if the student's comatose state had been caused by the pot cake, or if he had previous medical problems or had ingested other substances.

It seems that he is not the only one who experienced health problems after ingesting the pot cake. Other 10 students became ill and were hospitalized shortly after the party. They were all presenting symptoms like red eyes, euphoria and irregular heartbeat.

Hospital officials report that nine of them have been discharged, while the comatose patient is in stable condition. They denied to offer other details due to privacy issues.

Jose Dominguez de Posada, dean of Madrid's Alfonso X University, revealed that the students were aged between 18 and 22. It seems that the most affected of them was studying veterinary sciences.

He also mentioned that the students had probably cooked the cake by themselves out of campus, as they don't have a kitchen inside the university residence.

The University will take disciplinary action in their case, with the possibility of permanent or temporary expulsion.

A classmate of the hospitalized students said that this was just an isolated case, a “mistake,” and that something like this had not happened before in the University.
