Victims are led to bogus survey websites and tricked into handing over their personal data

With the large number of data breaches being reported these days, many people from the US are probably interested in checking their credit reports. If you’re among them, be sure to avoid clicking on links contained in unsolicited emails entitled “Your Credit Report Has Recently Been Updated.”

A large number of these emails have landed in my inbox over the past days.

When users click on the link from the email, they’re not taken to a genuine credit report website. Instead, they’re led, via multiple redirects, to a hacked site that hosts various survey scams.

Based on their location, internauts are told they’ve been “selected” and instructed to complete a number of surveys in order to win some Apple gadgets.

The crooks make money each time the surveys are completed, but they don’t settle for that. After all the questions are answered, victims are asked to enter their mobile phone numbers.

The mobile phone numbers harvested from unsuspecting users can be leveraged in spam and scam campaigns. They can also be utilized to sign up users for premium services.
