The death toll in the Santiago de Compostela train crash in Spain on Wednesday has risen to 80, with 141 other passengers injured.

NY Daily News writes that at least five people injured in the derailment were American. One of the two travelers succumbing to their wounds in hospital care yesterday was a US citizen.

Several people on the train were pilgrims on their way to a yearly event in Santiago. The St. James festival has been canceled this year after the tragedy.

As I reported before, police have arrested the train’s driver, Francisco Jose Garzon. He had previously chronicled his love of speed in a controversial Facebook entry.

“What joy it would be to get level with the police and then go past them making their speed guns go off. Ha ha!” he posted.
