A new Kickstarter campaign aims to raise enough funds to build an eco-friendly spa in San Francisco. The spa would be made from cargo containers that the shipping industry no longer has any use for, and would have a surprisingly small ecological footprint.

Nell Waters, the wellness entrepreneur behind this initiative, explains that, because it would be constructed from shipping containers, the spa would be mobile.

Thus, it would pop up wherever it would happen to find an available lot, entertain people for a while and then move to another location.

The water used by the spa would be heated by harvesting solar energy, and about 50% of the facility's water demands would be met by rain.

The spa would also be fitted with a state-of-the-art filtration system whose purpose would be to make sure that whatever water the spa's customers used was recycled.

“SOAK is designed to be less opulent than its predecessors (Sutro Baths for example, and Ancient Roman Balneas.) The framework for our modern idea is repurposed shipping containers designed to have solar panels on top, a rainwater catchment and filtration system, and a graywater garden on our back patio, all without sacrificing style.”

“The corrugated exterior of the containers means a sleek urban aesthetic, and the back patio means that on sunny days the bathhouse is not limited to an indoor experience,” reads the Kickstarter page for this project.
