Still set for the PC

Ubisoft said that it had canceled all plans to release World in Conflict: Soviet Assault for the Xbox 360 gaming console from Microsoft and for the PlayStation 3 platform from Sony. This comes just as the company confirmed that the release for the PC was in no way affected and would go through in the final days of March.

Soviet Assault has had quite a troubled history. It was initially set to be released in 2007 but it was hit by delays because of the need to port content to the two gaming consoles. It was re-scheduled for 2008 but as talks between Activision and Vivendi began on a merger, it was again put on hold. After the merger became reality, Activision went sifting through games set to be launched via the Sierra brand and started cutting them. Massive Entertainment, the developers of Soviet Assault, found they did not have a publisher and began looking around for a way to finally release their game. Ubisoft stepped in and gave them the support needed to nail down a release date for March 2009.

Soviet Assault is set to tell the story of the invasion of the United States of America and of Western Europe from the point of view of the Soviets. Faced with an economic crisis in 1989, they choose to go out with a bang and, profiting from the element of surprise, take out most of the defenses of the Western Allies. The Soviet missions will fill the gaps in the story that was told rather well in the original release of World in Conflict.

When the game was originally released, it was a very interesting diversion from the standard model of real time strategy. There's no base building and no resource collecting in the game. There’s a definite emphasis on the tactics employed, using a limited number of units and a handful of overall off the map powers.
