Five individuals appeared before a judge in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Friday after South African police cracked down on a gang suspected of being involved in cybercrimes.

According to Cape Times, the suspects were arrested last week after authorities had been tipped off.

When police raided their location, the suspects, aged between 26 and 32, attempted to throw their mobile phones out the window to get rid of evidence.

Police believe the individuals used phishing emails and SMSs to trick their victims into handing over personal and financial information. To make everything more legitimate-looking, the crooks abused the names of various companies.

A couple of laptop computers, 16 mobile phones, and documents containing sensitive information were seized from the suspects’ house.

Investigators found proof of payment emails on the seized computers.
