The official Twitter account of South African Ministry of State Security (@StateSecurityRS) was hacked last Saturday. The cybercriminals who compromised the account used it to lure users to the now-infamous miracle diet websites.

According to The Post, Ministry of State Security representatives confirmed that the account was hijacked. They stated that the account’s password was changed immediately after the breach was identified.

This is not the first time when a high-profile Twitter account is compromised and abused to promote bogus news websites that advertise miracle weight loss products.

Over the past few months, the accounts of a couple of Doctor Who actors and the ones of several World Wrestling Entertainment fighters have also been hijacked.

Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson has also fallen victim to hackers who compromise Twitter accounts with many followers. Clarkson threatened to “kill” the ones who hacked his account.
