Only recently, South Africa announced that it wanted to sell the rhino horns it had seized from poachers and illegal hunters over the past years.

As odd as this may sound, South Africa maintains that this measure will help safeguard the country's remaining rhino population.

This is because whatever money is raised at this sale will be used to fund conservation programs.

The plan might sound good on paper, but many conservationists warn that flooding the market with rhino horns will by no means yield any benefits as far as protecting the species from going extinct goes.

Live Science reports that a petition asking that the country be given permission to hold this sale will be submitted at the next meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.

This meeting won't take place until 2016, so maybe South Africa will change its mind by then.
