New beta SourceForge statistics page shows the users' download location

SourceForge, the world’s biggest open-source code repository, has rolled out brand new statistics tools for their users. Project owners and normal site visitors alike can now view accurate and detailed statistics about the downloads timeline, location and the user's operating system.

The company has kept dibs internally on how, when and from where projects are being downloaded since its launch. This has helped them determine the best mirror to download a project from, depending on the user's location. This policy has helped them always provide the best download speed for users in different locations across the Globe.

Through a post on their blog, the company announced at the end of May 2010 that they would be allowing everyone to view details about every project from now on. We've searched a project's menu high and low on all sides, but we were still unable to find direct links to the new statistics pages. It looks like the tools are still in beta development and will be fully accessible at a later date.

To access the statistics, just type the URLs presented below in your browser. Don't forget to replace PROJECTNAME with the name of any SourceForge hosted project.

Download statistics: https://sourceforge.net/downloads/PROJECTNAME/stats_timeline (graph line chart) Download location: https://sourceforge.net/downloads/PROJECTNAME/stats_map (heat map) User's operating system: https://sourceforge.net/downloads/PROJECTNAME/stats_os (pie chart)

Statistics are shown by default for the last week, but the user can select his/her own date range going back to February 1st, 2010. And don't worry about Flash blocking your browser, the graphs being presented use unobtrusive JavaScript.

Besides the new tool, admins also compiled a heat map showing the top most active countries on SourceForge in the last two months. The United States, Germany and Spain lead the way, followed by Brazil, Argentina, Italy, Mexico and France. Surprisingly for the development community, India is not in the top section.

The map can be seen attached to this post, courtesy of the SourceForge blog.

UPDATE: The new geolocation features are now accessible through the standard SourceForge statistics page now.
