AbleNet has announced the availability of SoundingBoard, a “groundbreaking iPhone, iPad and iPod touch application designed specifically for persons with disabilities,” the company claims.

At $49.99, SoundingBoard is not only groundbreaking, but pocket-breaking as well.

Using the app, clinicians, personal care assistants, or special education instructors can create communication boards for disabled people to “speak” simply by touching a message symbol shown on the screen.

AbleNet touts itself as a leader in providing educational and technical solutions to help children and adults with disabilities live their lives productively, and in a fulfilling manner.

“We are thrilled to now offer individuals with disabilities an easy-tech communication tool using exciting consumer technology from Apple,” said Jen Thalhuber, AbleNet CEO.

“People can use SoundingBoard with their iPod touch, iPad or iPhone to create new avenues of quick, easy communication. We are excited about the opportunities for people who are unable or reluctant to use their own voice to communicate.”

AbleNet provides an example of how the app can be employed to aid disabled persons, suggesting that teachers use the application to quickly create an exam to test comprehension.

Another good example is older students moving into the work environment, AbleNet believes. These can also use SoundingBoard “to communicate with their new employer and work team members,” the company suggests.

“Patients in a hospital or a dentist office can use SoundingBoard to communicate with their caregivers when they are temporarily unable to speak,” another example goes.

According to AbleNet, additional features typical to the SoundingBoard app, include:

- Hundreds of pre-loaded AbleNet symbols for nearly every common situation—choose symbols, record the associated message and create a communication board in under two minutes

- Ability to use photos from your own device library—easily customize communication boards to each unique situation

- Take a photo on the iPhone or the new iPod Touch to use with SoundingBoard immediately—adapt quickly to new situations in the classroom, workplace or community
