If you want an application that can improve the sound quality rendered by audio equipment, Hear ($19.99/€15) can do it. Besides the plethora of preset effects, it also allows you to adapt the frequencies to your liking.

Once installed (restart required), all sound on your computer, PC or Mac, is rendered through Hear, leading to a more enjoyable audio experience. The application brings to the table a set of ten modules that help you reach the desired sound quality.

The names of the modules are self-explanatory: 3D Surround, Extended Space, Extended FX, Extended Fidelity, Ambience, Contour Maximizer, Virtual Subwoofer, Compressor/Limiter, Equalizer and FAT.

Each of them comes with some configurable parameters and can be easily enabled from the main application window. The N-band equalizer with built-in peak limiter allows you to tweak the sound.
