Johnston Press has come a long way since its birth in 1767 as F. Johnston & Co Ltd. and has chosen to adapt to the modern IT environment through a collaboration with Sophos. The U.K. second publisher
of regional newspapers will implement security solutions from Sophos in order to shield its 9,000 users from computer threats in the over 250 locations where it operates. Johnston Press manages a volume of 148,000 emails on a daily basis and operates in excess of 250 Websites. For protection purposes the publisher will use Sophos Anti-Virus and PureMessage for Windows/Exchange, and the security vendor's latest ES4000 email security appliance. Johnston Press has deployed PureMessage on its exchange servers as a back-up security system for the two ES4000 appliances installed at the publisher's data centers to scan all incoming and outgoing e-mail.
"As many of our sites operate around the clock, we needed a solution that would give us peace of mind and leave us free to get on with our core activity of providing the news for local communities," said Roger Davies, group IT director at Johnston Press. "Sophos constantly monitors the appliance, and ensures that it automatically receives up-to-the minute protection updates. Sophos was also able to fulfil our other main requirements - remote deployment of the anti-virus software on desktops, and the ability to control the solution from a central location."
"We've already had considerable success with the ES4000, which is appealing to enterprises that require powerful email security protection with minimal impact on bandwidth," said Stuart Small, UK sales and marketing director at Sophos. "Johnston Press now has a high capacity solution which protects against IT security threats, and can be easily tailored to meet future needs."
