Security solutions provider Sophos has updated Sophos Mobile Security for Android to include spam filtering capabilities for calls and text messages.

In many countries, spam is illegal. However, that hasn’t stopped fraudsters and cybercriminals from initiating unsolicited or malicious communications via text messages or phone calls.

This is where Sophos Mobile Security steps in. The new features can block specific phone numbers and calls with a hidden caller ID, and spam SMSs that contain malicious links.

In case the blocked calls or text messages are needed, they can be restored from the Quarantine folder where they’re stored by the application.

“Even with legal crackdown on mobile spammers, SMS spam and SMiShing continue to grow at a rapid pace, as there are billions of mobile phone subscribers who use text messaging,” commented Thomas Lippert, product management, Sophos.

“And more spam means greater annoyance and risk to consumers, as many people trust messages that come directly to their phones or don’t necessarily think about what links they’re actually clicking.”

SophosMobile Security is available for download on Google Play.
