Built around a basic and intuitive graphical user interface, the Sophos Anti-Rootkit 1.0 is designed for the Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 operating systems providing a comprehensive solution that delivers rootkit detection and removal capabilities. Constructed to integrate seamlessly with Sophos Anti-Virus 6.0 as an additional protective service, the tool has been made immediately available for download. "The term rootkit is used to define a Trojan (or technology) used to hide the presence of a malicious object (process, file, registry key, network port) from the computer user or administrator," stated Sophos.

The tool performs a set of standard scan and remove actions, but Sophos has crafted Anti-Rootkit 1.0 limiting its management capabilities regarding essential system files compromised by an identified rootkit. In this context, the security company said that the tool will prompt the users with a warning if its actions place the efficiency and integrity of the operating system at any risk.

The standalone Anti-Rootkit 1.0 is being offered free of charge by Sophos and aims at delivering a low system impact utility that will present users and administrators with a new perspective over the security status of their machines by analyzing eventual hidden processes inherent with the presence of rootkits.

Sophos Anti-Rootkit 1.0 was tested by Softpedia as being 100% Free and is available for download here.
