33 billion dollars. This was the appraisal for the DVD and related products industry in 2004 and the growing rate is 18% every year, hence in 2009, DVDs will generate 77 billion.
These figures are the starting point of every discussion related to the income generated by the next optical storage format. The war between Blu Ray andHD DVD is already a well-known fact and since
products based on these standards are expected by the end of the year, the dispute is getting more intense with every passing minute.
That is why, everybody was surprised when Ryoji Chubachi, current president of the Sony corporation, stated that a compromise is desired.
Sony maintained its position, and yesterday, Yukinori Kawauchi, General Manager of Sony Video Group, restated in a Reuters interview that the company is looking for a solution which will satisfy everyone.
Yukinori Kawauchi declared that Sony is still backing up the idea of one standard, but unfortunately, there is nobody on the other side of the barricade willing to initiate negotiations.
Aside from Sony, which is waving the white flag of truce, none of the competitors involved in this format war hasn't made any move in this direction.
A day before the declaration of the Sony representative, the Taiwan companies said during a DVD format conference participated to by representatives of the Industrial Technology Research Institute, that they are backing up the HD DVD format. Therefore, the hostilities are not over and peace is postponed indefinitely.
