American digital readers were looking forward to upgrade their last year’s PRS-T2

Earlier this month, Sony rolled out its eReader baptized the PRS-T3 for Europe, Canada and other locations. The devices ship with a colored snap cover available in red, black and white. However, US customers were not given the same privilege.

And now, Sony officially announced that it wouldn’t bring its newest eReader to American soil. The news was first posted on the MobileRead forum by a user who received a reply by a Sony representative, as noted by The Digital Reader.

“Hi – I was just notified that Sony PRS-T3 is not coming to the US anymore. Please let me know if there is anything else I can assist with or if you’d like to consider other E-Reader options.”

Prompted by unsatisfied users, Sony rolled out an official statement afterwards.

“Sony will not be offering the Reader PRS-T3 in the United States. In response to the region’s market changes, Sony will be focus instead on mobile and tablet devices, including the Xperia Tablet Z and Xperia Z smartphone.”

However, “digital reading and eBooks remain an important priority for Sony. Reader Store will still help book lovers find and read their next story, anytime and anywhere, and customers can continue to expect new and exciting features and discovery tools. Reader Store will continue to support previous Readers as well as other compatible devices via the free Reader apps for PC, Mac, Android and iOS.”

So Sony is abandoning eReaders in favor of smartphones and tablets, at least in the US. Is it because American customers aren't interested in reading anymore or is that the Sony eReader PRS-T3 doesn't feature specs capable of capturing the population?

Anyway, for those who aren’t in the United States and need a refresh on Sony’s new digital reader, the PRS-T3 comes with a 6-inch touch-enabled display and packs the E Ink Pearl anti-glare technology and Clear IR Dual Touch Screen. There’s 2GB of storage offered on board and Wi-Fi.
