Not only is Sony releasing new Xperia devices, but the company also appears set to deliver software updates for existing phones.

Thus, the handset vendor is working with Vodafone Australia for the release of a new software update for the Xperia arc smartphone.

On the airwaves of this Australian wireless carrier, the smartphone will get a taste of Android 2.3.4 starting today.

“From today, 13th March 2012 – owners of the Sony Xperia arc can install a new software update onto their devices,” the carrier notes on its website.

“This is a bug-fixing maintenance release and will not outwardly affect the way you interact with your handset.”

The wireless services provider also notes that the new software update brings along a variety of bug fixes, together with optimizations for the device, and the latest Google security updates.

The new software update is being delivered to devices both via Firmware Over the Air (FOTA) or through Sony’s PC Companion Suite.

Users interested in downloading and installing the update on their devices should strongly consider backing up all data on the mobile phone before proceeding. Users can back up their mobiles through the Sony’s PC Companion Suite.

Those who would like to install the software update should also make sure that their devices are fully charged before launching the update process.

The firmware can be downloaded over the wireless carrier’s 3G network free of charge. However, given the fact that this is a large update, users are advised to turn on WiFi on their phones to download the file via FOTA.

If they chose to update the handset via a computer, users should make sure they do not disconnect it until the process is completed.
