Japanese mobile phone users can now purchase a new Android-based smartphone from Sony on the airwaves of wireless carrier NTT DoCoMo, namely the Xperia acro HD.

The new device, made official several weeks ago, comes as the Japanese flavor of Sony’s flagship Xperia ion smartphone that was launched in the United States on the airwaves of AT&T.

Previously, the smartphone was made available in the country with support for KDDI’s CDMA network, but users have now more options when it comes to the purchase of this device.

On interesting thing that is worth mentioning, however, is the fact that the new mobile phone sports the Sony Ericsson logo on the front, and that the same logo can be seen on its retail packaging as well.

Last year, Sony announced its plans to purchase Ericsson’s stake in Sony Ericsson and to take over the joint-venture. The purchase was completed earlier this year.

Following the acquisition, Sony Ericsson became Sony’s handset division, though it appears that the company hasn’t managed to put all the necessary details on the matter in order.

Regardless of the logo on the front, the device packs some highly appealing specifications, starting with the fast 1.5GHz dual-core application processor that powers it.

Moreover, the mobile phone arrives on shelves with a 4.3-inch touchscreen display that can deliver an HD resolution (720 x 1280 pixels).

The smartphone also comes with 16GB of internal memory, along with a microSD memory card slot with support for additional storage space. It also includes an 1840mAh battery and HDMI port. On the back, the new Android handset packs a 12.1-megapixel photo snapper with Exmor R camera sensor.

The smartphone also features a series of capabilities specific to the Japanese market, including NFC mobile wallet and TV tuner, while being waterproof if submerged to depths of 1m.
