Starting today, mobile phone users in Russia have the possibility to purchase the Sony Xperia ZL smartphone in their country, thus becoming the first in the world to receive access to the handset.

The mobile phone was put on pre-order in Russia in late February, when Sony announced that it would have it up for sale in early March, and can now be bought through Sony’s official web store in the country.

The smartphone features a price tag of 27,490 Rubles (around $900 / €690), and is available in Black and White flavors on this page on Sony’s website.

As UnwiredView notes, other countries in Europe should receive the smartphone later this month or starting with April, and might see it at lower prices, since smartphones are usually more expensive in Russia.

Xperia ZL was unveiled in early January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas along with the Xperia Z, and arrives on shelves with features and capabilities similar to those of the high-end device.

However, unlike the Xperia Z, Sony’s Xperia ZL packs a more compact body and lacks the water and dust proof features that the former was packed with.

However, it still has to offer a 5-inch full HD touchscreen display, along with a 1.5GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory, which has been paired with a microSD memory card slot to enable storage expansion.

The smartphone also features a 13-megapixel photo snapper on the back, with support for 1080p video recording, as well as a front camera to enable video calling.

Its specs list also includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC connectivity capabilities, built-in GPS receiver, the usual set of sensors, and Google’s Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system loaded on top (Sony also promised an upgrade to the newer Android 4.2 platform for the not too distant future).
