Sony will launch its next flagship sometime in summer

As you probably know by now, Sony was one of the device makers that abstained from launching a flagship smartphone at MWC 2015, leaving room for Samsung and HTC to do their thing.

The rumor mill expects Sony to unveil the upcoming Xperia Z4 sometime this summer, away from the commotion and fuss in Barcelona.

While not all details about the upcoming Xperia Z4 flagship have been made available to our eyes, today we’re treated to the first images showing the phone’s casing, compared to the Xperia Z3's. (as seen at FutureSupplier).

Sony Xperia Z4 will look very similar to the Z3 but...

It seems Sony will maintain much of the design fashion of the current Xperia Z3 when its upcoming flagship is concerned. However, there are a few subtle differences (some with long lasting consequences) that should be pointed out.

But first for the positive points. The Xperia Z4 will arrive in the wild with a sleeker frame. The difference won’t be all that notable, but at least Sony was able to shave 1 mm / 0.04 inches off its newest device, putting it at around 7.3 mm / 0.29 inches. This means the Xperia Z4 will be chunkier than both the iPhone (6.9 mm / 0.27 inches) and the Galaxy S6/S6 Edge (6.8 mm / 0.26 inches).

Sony Xperia Z4 will be missing some key ingredients

Now for the not so cool parts. For starters, it seems that Sony won’t be making the Xperia Z4 waterproof like its previous iterations, which is pretty odd since waterproof capabilities are a distinctive mark of Sony’s smartphone line.

This conclusion has been drawn based on the fact that the microUSB port now lives at the bottom of the device and is no longer protected by the usual flap.

Another major negative point is that it appears the Xperia Z4 won’t be coming with a microSD card. The same goes for the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge smartphones. Is this a development trend for flagship devices? We certainly hope not.

So it seems that with its latest Xperia Z4, Sony is ready to lose some measure features. Will customers like it? Probably not, but since we’re a few months away from the actual product launch, there are chances things will change.
