Japanese mobile phone maker Sony Mobile is expected to make its next flagship Android-based smartphone official on September 3, during a press event already announced for the IFA 2014 trade show in Berlin.

Previously, the company confirmed that a new flagship smartphone would be revealed six months after the Xperia Z2’s launch, although it did not reveal specific details on the phone itself.

According to a recent post on XperiaBlog, the company will hold a press event in Berlin on September 3 from 16:15 to 17:00 CEST, and Xperia Z3 is expected to make an official appearance there.

However, it seems that this won’t be the only new device that the Japanese handset vendor will launch, and that a Sony Xperia Z3 Compact smartphone might also become official there.

For those out of the loop, we should note that Sony Xperia Z3 has emerged online a few times before, and that it is expected to land on shelves with a 5.15-inch touchscreen display capable of delivering a full HD resolution.

Moreover, the mobile phone is said to be powered by a 2.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor, which should be paired with 3GB of RAM.

Additionally, the upcoming smartphone should include 16GB or 32GB of internal memory, along with a microSD memory card slot for expansion purposes.

On the back, the handset will feature a 20.7-megapixel camera, most probably with 4K video calling capabilities, the same as its predecessor does, complemented by a front camera for making video calls while on the go.

Sony Xperia Z3 is also expected to arrive on shelves with a waterproof body, while running under the Android 4.4 KitKat operating system.

The aforementioned Xperia Z3 Compact, on the other hand, should sport a smaller, 4.5-inch touchscreen display capable of delivering a 720p resolution.

The phone is said to be powered by the same Snapdragon 801 processor as that of its larger counterpart, though it might feature only 2GB of RAM inside.

However, the smaller phone should pack the same 20.7MP camera on the back, while running under Android KitKat as well. Sony is expected to release it with a waterproof design as well.

For the time being, however, all that we have on the two devices includes rumored specs, with no confirmation on them available. However, should Sony be set to make them official on September 3, more details on them will emerge very soon, so stay tuned to learn the news.
