The new slate seems like a smaller version of the Xperia Z2 Tablet

Sony might have teased an image of the upcoming Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact which will show its face at the IFA 2014 consumer show in Berlin, Germany.

However, the “accident” didn’t really shed a lot of light on the matter of the smallish tablet. After all, we weren't granted a window into the specifications of the device, so we were just left speculating in the dark.

Now, AndroidOrigin got word from a tipster familiar with Sony’s plans who revealed some of the specifications of the mini tablet. This is what usually happens before a major event like IFA, so the specs we’re going to be detailing in what follows are probably accurate.

As you might already know, Sony hasn't been such an active player in the tablet field. But after pulling out of its eReader and laptop/convertible business, the company is currently focusing its whole attention on the mobile division. Hence, the Xperia Tablet Z3 Compact comes just a few months after the flagship Xperia Z2 Tablet was announced at MWC 2014.

Anyway, you’re probably dying inside to find out the specs, so here we go. Sony’s new 8-incher will arrive with the same TRILUMINOS screen used with the Xperia Z2 Tablet and deliver 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution (bad luck for those hoping to see something akin to the iPad mini with Retina Display or Samsung Galaxy TabPRO 8.4 resolution-wise).

The screen will enjoy the benefits of an anti-reflective coating on top, but there’s no mention of the water resistance feat, although it’s highly unlikely the tablet will debut without it.

Moving on, the slate will draw power from a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 not a Snapdragon 805. Yet the version used with the new tab will be a faster one, coming in the form of an MSM897AC processor.

The Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet takes advantage of an MSM8974AB model instead, which can be clocked to a max of 2.3GHz. By contrast, the new version can go as far as 2.5GHz.

Furthermore, the small tab will come equipped with 3GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, pretty much like the company’s current 10.1-inch flagship.

In the photography department, the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact will feature an 8MP Sony Exmprr RS sensor on the back, but we’re not given any specifics about the frontal “selfie” camera.

Keeping everything running onboard will be a 4500 mAh or 5000 mAh battery, which is pretty decent for a smallish 8-inch tablet like this one.

Last but not least, the device is expected to pack LTE connectivity, NFC and Bluetooth 4.0. It would have been interesting to find out some info about the pricing, but we’ll probably have to wait for the official unveiling to know this aspect.
