The handset’s display shatters, but it's still operable

We all go through this: we purchase a brand, new shiny smartphone and do our best to treat it gently. But at some point, the inevitable still happens, no matter how long you try to dance around it, you will still drop your phone at some point.

The scenarios are endless and every smartphone owner probably has their own story to tell. That’s why most of us usually coat our handsets with protective cases in order to prevent damage to our costly devices.

However, more and more manufacturers are striving to erase the idea of a protective case out of your brain. After all, handsets are getting more and more stylish and you should be able to appreciate them at their true value.

That’s why device makers are building their devices as sturdy as they can. A good example would be the Oppo R5, which has been shown in a promotional video as being able to smash apples, crack nuts and come out still operational after being run over by a car.

Sony Xperia Z3 goes through several endurance tests

Well, the Oppo R5 is not the only smartphone available on the market that can endure quite a lot. The Sony Xperia Z3 is a waterproof smartphone, but it’s also quite resistant.

The folks over at Digiato put the handset through several tests, trying to determine whether the Xperia Z3 could take it or not.

You can check out what they did in the video below, but be warned that the clip is not in English, so don’t expect to understand much.

But what happens in it is pretty evident. The Xperia Z3 gets dropped on concrete several times without mercy (from 180 cm / 71 inches and above).

At some point the guy performing the test climbs on a bench and throws the Xperia from there and you can clearly see that the display smashes. Still, the handset remains functional and responsive.

Like in the case of the Oppo R5, the Xpeira Z3 also gets run over by a car (two tires go over it). Amazingly, the handset survives, can be turned on and is even used to snap a photograph.

So if you want a resistant smartphone, one that won’t damage too quickly, the Xperia Z3 seems like a good idea.

The Sony Xperia Z4 is coming out in January

Anyhow, in a few weeks Sony will be present at CES 2015 in Las Vegas, where we’re expecting to see the Xperia Z4 launch into the wild. The handset is said to arrive with a 5.4-inch quad HD display with 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution and Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor under the bonnet.

Sony’s press event is scheduled for January 5, so keep an eye out for the new Xperia Z4.
