It’s only been one day since HTC One 2014 was spotted in Rightware’s Basemark OS II benchmark and now another upcoming flagship smartphone got its hardware tested, the Xperia Z2.

Unveiled last month at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2014, Sony Xperia Z2 has just been introduced in Taiwan and will slowly be rolled out globally in the coming weeks.

Until then, Android enthusiasts will be offered the chance to grab another flagship smartphone, the All New HTC One, which is now available for purchase in the UK at Carphone Warehouse and in the United States at Verizon Wireless.

HTC’s new Android smartphone is very powerful and that can be clearly seen in the latest benchmarks that have just popped up online. We reported yesterday on the All New HTC One’s appearance in Basemark II OS benchmark where it performed admirably.

In fact, the All New HTC One topped the benchmark rankings beating other powerful smartphones like the Asus PadFone Infinity 2, Pantech Vega Secret Note, LG Nexus 5 and iPhone 5s.

Today, however, the HTC’s new flagship smartphone dropped one place in the top 5 phone rankings. The new most powerful Android smartphone available on the market now seems to be the Sony Xperia Z2, which scored considerably higher than the All New HTC One.

Although the hardware differences between the two smartphones are not that obvious, it appears that Sony’s high-tier device has been optimized to perform better.

Even though both smartphones are equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 801 chipset that packs 2.3GHz quad-core processors and Adreno 330 graphics processing units, the Xperia Z2 boasts 3GB of RAM, while HTC’s phone only comes with 2GB of RAM.

Software-wise, both devices are powered by the same Android 4.4.2 KitKat operating system, but they feature different UIs.

The other three devices that complete the top 5 rankings in Rightware’s Basemark OS II are Asus PadFone Infinity 2, Pantech Vega Secret Note and LG Nexus 5. With the entrance of the Xperia Z2 directly on first place, Apple’s iPhone 5s seems to be out of top 5 phones.

It’s clear though that the reason for Sony Xperia Z2’s and HTC One 2014’s great benchmark performances is the Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 801 chipset, which is a major improvement over the older Snapdragon 800 chip.

It will be interesting to see how well the Galaxy S5 performs against the Xperia Z2 and HTC One 2014. The first benchmarks will probably appear before the smartphone goes on sale next month, so stay tuned.
