Sony has yet to offer an official confirmation on its next flagship Android-based handset, though it appears that it might not be too long before the company makes such a move.

Following a wide range of reports on the matter, what appears to be the back plate of the upcoming handset has made an appearance online, paired with some details on the phone’s hardware specifications.

The forthcoming device is expected to land on shelves as Xperia Z2, while featuring the codename of Sirius, just as previous reports on the matter have suggested.

The newly leaked image with the phone’s back comes from Digi-wo, but it is said to have been provided by a person who works in Sony's R&D department.

The pic shows a purple back cover, with the camera placed in the left corner, and with flash situated next to it.

According to the leaker, Sony will unveil Xperia Z2 with a 5.3-inch touchscreen display, while also packing it with a 23-megapixel camera on the back. Moreover, the smartphone is said to arrive in no less than 5 different color options.

Basically, this suggests that the yet unannounced device will be a bit larger when compared to what we’ve heard about it before (namely that it would sport a 5.2-inch screen).

One interesting fact that can be seen in the leaked photo is that Sony will adopt a metallic or carbon fiber material for the upcoming smartphone, moving away from the glass back used in previous models, as PhoneArena notes.

The Japanese mobile phone maker is reportedly on track to make the new device official as soon as the next month, most probably during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Unfortunately, no official confirmation on any of these has been provided as of now, and we’ll have to take the above with a grain of salt. Hopefully, more will be unveiled soon, so stay tuned to learn additional details on this device.
