Starting today, Australian mobile phone users who are also Telstra customers can pre-order the Sony Xperia Z2 smartphone on the network of their wireless carrier.

The handset, officially announced in the country last week, is already available for purchase in the country at Optus, as well as through the Sony Store online portal.

At the moment, the Xperia Z2 can be seen listed on this page on Telstra’s website, available on the wireless carrier’s $70- (€47-) per-month plan, with a total minimum cost of $1680 (€1127) over 24 months.

The Xperia Z2 smartphone comes to the market with a great deal of highly appealing features, including a 20.7-megapixel camera on the back and with support for 4K video recording.

In fact, this is one of the main features that Telstra touts for this device, in addition to its dust- and water-proof capabilities. The handset can be submerged in 1.5m of fresh water for up to 30 minutes, the company notes.

“Sony’s excellent camera and 4K camcorder technologies in a waterproof smartphone, including SteadyShot for more stable images and Timeshift video with slow-motion effects,” Telstra notes, referring to the phone’s camera.

“Not just good-looking, the Xperia Z2 is waterproof up to 1.5 m for 30 minutes in fresh water. Dust resistant, with tough tempered glass and a durable one-piece aluminium frame, means you’ll be protected wherever you go.”

Sony Xperia Z2 also features a 5.2-inch full HD touchscreen TRILUMINOS display with X-Reality for mobile engine and is powered by a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor, paired with 3GB of RAM for increased performance capabilities.

Moreover, the smartphone arrives on shelves with 16GB of internal memory but allows users to add up to 128GB of storage to it, via a microSD memory card slot.

The aforementioned 20.7-megapixel back camera with flash is complemented by a 2.2MP front camera, which should prove a great option for users looking to make video calls while on the go.

At the same time, the mobile phone features 4G LTE connectivity capabilities, as well as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, and a built-in GPS receiver. The phone is powered by a 3200mAh battery with STAMINA Mode, capable of offering up to 19 hours of talk time, or up to 740 hours of standby time.

The Sony Xperia Z2 measures 146.8 x 8.2 x 73.3mm and weighs 163 grams. The handset runs under the Android 4.4.2 KitKat platform out of the box but also features exclusive customizations and applications coming from Sony itself.
